The cyclist suffered several broken leg bones and a chest injury after he was thrown from his cycle, said State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones.
Jones said a driver told police she pulled her 2002 Oldsmobile to the side of the road after experiencing mechanical problems during a traffic backup headed to the George Washington Bridge.
Moments later, her car was struck on the left rear by a northbound 2006 Honda being ridden on the shoulder — apparently in an attempt to bypass traffic.
Another cyclist who was with him swerved to avoid the traffic and fell off his bike, as well. But he apparently suffered no injuries, declined treatment and then went on his way, Jones said.
Fort Lee police closed down the northbound express lanes for several hours. Leonia police also dispatched units for traffic control. Englewood police remained on standby in case additional assistance was needed.
