Antonia Morales, 47, told the New York Times that her son, Alejandro, has been treated for schizophrenia, is often heavily medicated and is supposed to be in a halfway house after serving time in prison on an assault conviction.

She said she tried to get the 25-year-old parolee to return a halfway house after he told her on Christmas Eve that he wanted to kill someone.

Morales stabbed young Anthony Maldonado several times, including in the chest, in a Morningside Heights apartment where Antonia lives with the boy’s uncle, Alejandro Morales and two other sons, the NYPD said.

Anthony had been spending the holiday weekend with his uncle at the sprawling complex of tenements off West 123rd Street, relatives told police. Police said the uncle was in his bedroom, with the door closed, when two of the brothers went out around 3:30 a.m., leaving Anthony alone with Alejandro.

Moments later, Anthony staggered to his uncle’s room, knocked on the door and then collapsed, authorities said.

The fourth-grader — who lived with his mother on Henry Street in Palisades Park — died at nearby St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital less than an hour later, the NYPD said. He’d been stabbed in the chest and elsewhere and had apparent defense wounds on his face and arms, police said.
