Tysean Afflick, 27, tried putting the cash down as a deposit on the 2010 vehicle at Luxury Hause, a high-end used car dealership on Grand Avenue off Route 46, on Friday, Police Chief Thomas Rowe told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.
“The salesman got hinky. He could tell something was up,” Rowe said. “So he called us.”
Detective Michael Jennings rushed over to the dealership and took Afflick, of Harlem, into custody. He also contacted the Georgia officer, who apparently didn’t know that his identity had been stolen.
Rowe said his department has traced the source of the ID and the money to the Bronx. An investigation was continuing.
Police will pursue forfeiture of the cash, the chief said.
Afflick, meanwhile, posted $15,000 bail and was released from the Bergen County Jail hours after his arrest.
He is charged with wrongful impersonation, attempted theft by deception, submitting false documents and obstruction.
