It began when the trio and two others -- all from Leonia -- jumped the fence at the borough swim club after 10 p.m. Wednesday, Leonia Police Capt. Scott Tamagny told Daily Voice.

"They went swimming and smoked pot there -- and even left a bag of marijuana behind," he said. "Then they split up."

Soon after, Palisades Park police "received a call from a resident reporting he saw three males attempting to burglarize numerous cars," said Lt. Mark Jackson, that department's officer in charge. "Later on the call came in for a stolen motor vehicle."

Detectives tracked down the trio, he said.

Meanwhile, Tamagny found the stolen car abandoned in the parking lot at Sylvan Park.

A gold ring belonging to a Leonia resident was also found.

Fred Harakandi, 19, and Eryc Simeoli, 20, were charged with joyriding and auto theft and were released pending a court hearing. The juvenile was issued a delinquency complaint based on the same offenses.

Leonia police also charged 18-year-old Andrew Scanlon and a 17-year-old boy with trespassing at the pool and pot possession.

They also asked that anyone who had their car broken into contact them at (201) 944-0800.
