A frightened clerk was pointing at 23-year-old David Debowski as Leonia Police Officer Frank Rocco pulled into the parking lot of the Grand Avenue convenience store around 2 a.m., Englewood Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Rocco stopped Debowski and called for backup officers, who found his 22-year-old girlfriend, Marjorie Alva of Elmwood Park, waiting in a car outside the store, Torell said.

Police returned $780 in cash that they said Debowski took from the frightened clerk by pretending he had a gun under his sweatshirt.

He was being held on $100,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with armed robbery.

Alva was being held on $50,000 bail, charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, possession of a knife (in her bag) and possession of Xanax without a prescription.
