Detectives then went to Edison, where 21-year-old Avelino De Paz Ajiatas worked as a food preparer, and arrested him at his job yesterday, Police Chief Benjamin Ramos told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Neighbors called police just before 1 a.m. yesterday after hearing the 20-year-old woman’s screams and looking out to see her being assaulted in front of her Roff Avenue home.
Officers found her crying in the street, Ramos said.
The 5-foot-5, 135-pound Ajiatas had fled, he said.
Police interviewed the woman — who’d broken up with him a few months ago, Ramos said — as well as neighbors and others.
After discovering that Ajiatas worked at a Korean restaurant on Old Ridge Road in Edison, they faxed a copy of an arrest warrant for him to their police colleagues in the Middlesex County town, the chief said.
Ajiatas was returned yesterday afternoon and charged with kidnapping, burglary and threatening to kill the victim. He remained held on $100,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail today.
The INS has issued a detainer for his arrest for deportation purposes if he should make bail or is otherwise released.
