Detective T.J. Cullen of the department’s Anti-Crime Unit said he was on patrol on Bergen Boulevard Tuesday afternoon when he pulled over a Ford Mustang driven by 32-year-old Derek Morin for speeding.
While asking Morin for his driver’s license, Cullen said he “observed an orange syringe cap on the floorboard” and “knew from experience” what it was.
Morin and his passenger, 25-year-old Paul Bussanich, “had conflicting stories about their travels to New York City,” the detective added.
Bussanich “turned over 17 glassine envelopes of suspected heroin” to Cullen, who searched Morin and found three more, Capt. Thomas Ottina said.
A consented search of the vehicle also turned up the baseball cards.
According to Ottina, “neither male could provide a reasonable explanation as to how they came in possession of the cards,” so Cullen seized them “pending further investigation.”
Morin and Bussanich were each charged with possession of heroin and paraphernalia.
Morin, who was also issued two motor vehicle summonses, posted $5,000 bail and was released.
Bussanich remained held on $7,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail late this afternoon.
