Robert J. Howarth gave his name as "Bob Lee" and "Robert Lee" after he was stopped just before 4 p.m. Friday on Horizon Road, Capt. Patrick Kissane said Wednesday night.

"It appears as though Howarth has been living in the Bergen County area for the past three years," the captain said, adding that the investigation was continuing.

Howarth was wanted in Maine on theft by deception and Securities Act violations, Kissane said.

Claiming to be a successful businessman, he conned investigators out of more than $570,000, according to two indictments returned by grand juries in Maine last year.

Howarth remained on the run using aliases that included Robert Chiofolo, Robert Kim Lee and Robert Sachs, authorities said.

He remained held in the Bergen County Jail as a fugitive from justice early Friday pending extradition.

Fort Lee police charged him with obstruction and hindering.
