The stakeout — in which officers pose as pedestrians and then nail motorists who don’t yield the right of way — was conducted twice on Hudson Terrace, including for the first time on a weekend.
Extreme?
Not in a borough where seven pedestrians were struck — one of them killed — in January, followed by seven more pedestrians struck over the next two months, the chief said.
Coincidence?
Through more than two weeks of April, amid Bendul’s campaign, no pedestrians have been struck.
The “Cops in the Crosswalk” program, headed by Deputy Chief Tim Ford, is funded through a grant from the Department of Highway and Traffic Safety.
The summonses not only carry fines of $230 — it’s also 2 points off your license.
So beware, Bendul said: “Additional enforcement details will be scheduled to also include evening hours on streets throughout the borough where pedestrians have been struck.”
“Safety is a top priority for the Fort Lee Police Department,” the chief noted. “Every uniformed officer is assigned a pedestrian detail or a traffic enforcement assignment on each shift.
“Summonses will continue to be issued.”
