Officer Brett Howard was on a traffic detail on Main Street at William Street yesterday afternoon when he heard the woman’s cries, Fort Lee Police Chief Keith Bendul said.
In the courtyard he found Jeffrey Ortiz trying to help his wife, Ekaterina, into their home.
Howard called for an ambulance, got them inside, then helped deliver the 8-pound-4-ounce newborn — named Nicholas, the chief said.
Emergency Services Unit Officers Kevin Kosuda and Chris Richter arrived soon after, along with Fort Lee Ambulance, which took the mother and child to Englewood hospital.
Howard, a decorated 14-year police veteran, transferred from the North Bergen Police Department to Fort Lee in 2002, Bendul noted.
“The department is very proud of [him] for his professionalism and the actions he took while helping a mother and a new Fort Lee resident,” the chief said.
“Congratulations to the Ortiz family.”
