“Two men in a vehicle apparently picked the female victim up in New York and were supposed to drive her home to the Bronx,” Molinelli said.
“They came across the George Washington Bridge to Fort Lee, where the driver of the vehicle got out of the car and attempted to sexually assault the female,” the prosecutor said.
“It appears that the other male remained in the back seat of the car and may have been incapacitated due to alcohol or other substance,” he said. “A good Samaritan cab driver came upon the scene which apparently caused the male to immediately get back in his car and leave via the PIP northbound.
“Sometime later this vehicle crashed into a tree in Alpine, bursting into flames. The driver [was] dead at scene and the male passenger was ejected and taken to [a] local hospital, where his condition [was] unknown.”
The woman was taken to hospital as well, Molinelli said.
“No one was chasing the vehicle to our knowledge at this time and circumstances surrounding crash also unknown,” he said at 9:33 this morning.
CLIFFVIEW PILOT originally reported earlier this morning that another driver happened up on the crime and chased the man responsible just after 3:30 a.m..
That man tossed the woman from the car and sped off north on the Palisades Interestate Parkway with a sleeping passenger in the car, the site was told.
Various agencies convered on the scene of the accident, which at first was being handled by the Palisades Interstate Parkway police and is now in the hands of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
Besides the sheriff’s office and prosecutor’s fatal accident unit, the county Medical Examiner was summoned.
The Palisades Interstate Parkway Police does not conduct Fatal Accident investigations,” Molinelli said, “so we are the lead agency on both cases.”
