LEONIA, N.J. — It was fortunate no schoolchildren were at a Leonia intersection when a rental car driven by an intoxicated Minneapolis man in town for a conference plowed into the back of another vehicle Tuesday morning, police said.

"We have a crossing guard right at that corner" of Grand Avenue and Christie Heights Street, where the 8 a.m. rear-ender occurred, Capt. Scott Tamagny told Daily Voice. "We're lucky no children were nearby when this happened."

Edward Peterson, 28, remained at police headquarters Tuesday afternoon while police tried to find an adult he could be released to. His co-workers were all attending an audio-video conference, Tamagny explained.

Peterson, who flew into JFK on Sunday, apparently was headed to his hotel room in Englewood when he pulled the Hertz rental car behind a 2013 Nissan 370, driven by a 24-year-old Palisades Park man, that was stopped at a red light, the captain said.

Peterson hit the gas when the light changed and rammed his car into the other, he said.

Neither he nor the other driver was hurt, Tamagny said. Both vehicles were towed -- the Nissan because of the damage and the rental because of the arrest, he said.

Police charged Peterson with DWI, tailgating, reckless driving and having an open bottle of Jameson's in the car.
