The black Nissan Altima driven by 28-year-old Miguel Guera of Washington State mounted the sidewalk on Lemoine Avenue, “crashing into and knocking down a light pole, a street sign and pole, a flood light, several bushes and destroying a parking meter,” after which he tried to flee across the bridge around 5 a.m., Joseph Pentangelo of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.
Port Authority Police Officer Edwin Berdecia spotted the car, rushed over and found Guera slurring and unsteady, with “strong alcohol on his breath,” Pentangelo said.
He was arrested and charged with DWI. Fort Lee police are expect to add charges.
It was the first of two arrests at the toll plaza this morning.
Around 7:45 a.m., Port Authority police grabbed Ronald Brown, 46, of Miramar, FL, for driving his 1999 Kenworth tractor trailer through an E-ZPass lane without a front license plate and with a bent rear plate, evading the toll.
He was charged with theft of services and tampering with public records.
