The free public event honors military veterans and recognizes two borough residents who have made significant contributions to the community.

Post members will surprise one of its guests of honor with the annual Citizen of the Year Award.

First given in 1956, it recognizes an adult citizen for volunteer service. Former award recipients are invited to attend the ceremony in support of the 2013 recipient.

In addition, the post will present its Young Volunteer of the Year Award in recognition of a younger resident’s volunteer work. Started in 1991, the award is part of the National VFW Ladies Auxiliary program.

The awards ceremony will be held in the upper hall, beginning at 8 p.m. Those attending should use the post’s Leonia Avenue entrance.

Cake and coffee will be served after the ceremony.
