Blood match leads to charges in failed Leonia burglary

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Leonia police charged a career burglar with an attempted December home break-in after DNA in a blood smear found on a rear window returned a match. Finding him was easy, Chief Jay Ziegler said this morning: He’s in the Essex County Jail under an assumed name, charged with a burglary in Verona.

Anthony J. Martinelli, 42, of Newark, was charged in connection with the failed Dec. 4 break-in on Broad Avenue near Van Orden Avenue, thanks to a match turned up by the New Jersey State Police lab to a sample collected by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification.

Surveillance video and still shots were distributed after the incident and publicized, but police had no luck finding him until then, Ziegler said.

Once the match was made, a computer search found Martinelli held in the Essex County Jail under the name “Andrew Goldberg,” one of many he’s used over the years.

Martinelli’s aliases have included:

Goldberg, Anthony
Goldberg, Andrew
James, Andrew
Jayes, Andrew
Jays, Andrew
Martinelle, Anthony
Mavlinelli, Anthony
Pine, Andrew
Toney, Andrew
Tony, Andrew
