Charles Ann (MUGSHOT: Bergen County Prosecutor)
Bai for Charles J. Ann, an unemployed student who lives at Bridge Plaza North in Fort Lee, was set at $3 million.
Ann repeatedly ran over 25-year-old Aena Hong with his 2011 Hyundai Sonata at the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Inwood Terrace in Fort Lee and then fled just before 5 p.m. Monday, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.
Hong was pronounced dead at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck at 5:54 p.m., he said.
“Witnesses described Ms. Hong walking while arguing with [Ann],” Molinelli said, adding that she was breaking up with him after a year of dating.
Ann then drove off but turned the vehicle around, the prosecutor said. Then, as Hong began crossing the street, Ann gunned the accelerator and hit her, he said.
He then “put the car in reverse and backed up over the victim and subsequently drove forward over the victim” at least three times, Molinelli said.
The Sonata was found a short distance away at Tenth Avenue, he said.
A bulletin was issued for Ann, who records show came to the U.S. in 2009.
Ann turned up at a friend’s apartment in Flushing, where the NYPD and detectives from Molinelli’s office arrested him at 4 a.m.
Molinelli said Ann was carrying his passport and “a large sum of cash,” indicating “that he was attempting to flee the country.”
“Although a naturalized citizen, Ann is a native of Korea and has ties to that country through relatives,” the prosecutor said.
Ann is being held in Queens Criminal Court pending an extradition hearing. An autopsy is planned for later today at the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office.
