85-year-old bystander, carjacker killed in Palisades Park crash

An 85-year-old woman standing at a Palisades Park bus stop was killed after a carjacker lost control of an SUV that hit two utility poles and careened into her, Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire said. The driver was killed, as well, he said.

A Jersey City resident had been drinking with friends in Leonia and called for a car to take him home shortly after 5:30 a.m., McGuire said. Somewhere in Leonia, the driver was assaulted and carjacked, he said.

The car was speeding south on Grand Avenue into Palisades Park when the driver lost control and the vehicle spun out and smashed into the poles, knocking them down and killing him, before it careened into the woman, the sheriff said.

The crash knocked out power to the area, while creating problems for emergency workers trying to get to the scene.
