He was born in the Bronx.
Hellman was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
A graduate of Hunter College and Steven's Institute of Technology, he earned master's degrees in physics and business administration. He was a freelance science writer who published more than 30 books in science and technology and countless articles in major science publications.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sheila Almer Hellman.
He is survived by his children, Jill Hellman and Jennifer Hellman-Anderson and her husband Kelly; granddaughter, Stephanie Rosenberg; and his companion, Fay Klein.
The family will sit Shiva from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday at Jill Hellman's home.
