FORT LEE, N.J. -- A funeral Mass was held Monday morning for Sal Luppino of Fort Lee, a father of three who coached sports in town and in Englewood Cliffs and was president of the annual St. Rocco Society feast.

Luppino, 40, who died last Wednesday, battled throat cancer the past three years with widespread support from loved ones, friends and even strangers around the world.

"Through his courageous battle with cancer, he took the time to speak to the entire 2014 study body two years ago sharing a very powerful and inspiring message to our entire school that we will never forget," Paramus Catholic High School posted on Facebook. "We have been so blessed to have known him and will always keep him in our thoughts and prayers."

The Class of '94 Paramus Catholic graduate's family also received condolences from various area departments and agencies.

"He was a great guy, always with a smile on his face and always willing to lend a helping hand," the Fort Lee Office of Emergency Management added. "Sal had a heart of gold and he will be missed."

"Sal was a previous DPW worker and always worked well with our department," Englewood Cliffs police wrote.

A "Comedians For Cancer" Night fundraiser at The GW Grill in late December drew a huge crowd, along with donations and contributions from more than a dozen local businesses.

A self-employed contractor and home developer, Luppino was born in Teaneck on April 5, 1975, the youngest of three children.

He leaves his children, Vincenzo, Francesca and Angelina, his parents, Frances and Vincenzo, his brother, Joseph, and his wife Carmela, and his girlriend, April Lanza.

Luppino is also survived by family and friends in Italy and Australia.

A.K. Macagna Funeral Home in Cliffside Park handled the arrangements. Interment was in Madonna Mausoleum in Fort Lee following Mass at Madonna R.C. Church.
