The popular psychologist, TV advice star and syndicated columnist would have turned 89 on Thursday.
She lived in Fort Lee for over 40 years and worked from her home office there, spinning daily advice columns from 1960 until her death.
Brothers first gained fame in 1955 answering questions on the topic of boxing on the television show, "The $64,000 Question." She was the only woman, and the second person ever, to win the top prize.
From there, she became a pioneer in television in 1958, dispensing psychological advice.
She was a columnist for Good Housekeeping, and wrote a daily syndicated advice column that appeared in more than 350 newspapers.
In 1959 she published “10 Days to a Successful Memory,” her first of 15 books, some of which were translated into three dozen languages.
She made television cameo appearances on many shows, including “Happy Days” and “The Simpsons.” She was on Johnny Carson's “The Tonight Show” nearly 100 times.
Born in Brooklyn, she graduated from Far Rockaway High School and went to Cornell University at the age of 16. She earned her Ph.D in psychology from Columbia University.
Her husband Milton Brothers, an internist, died of cancer in 1989. They had one daughter, Lisa Brothers Arbisser, M.D.
Brothers died of respiratory failure at her home in Fort Lee. She was 85.
