TENAFLY, N.J. -- What to wear? It's the lament of many a woman, especially at the holidays when you want to look your best.

Daily Voice asked Beth Thomas Cohen, a Tenafly native, longtime fashionista and author of the recently released "Drop the Act, It’s Exhausting!" on what's best for every occasion. Her suggestions follow.

An Office Party: Choose a fun top with an embellishment and pair it with a great skirt or pant. I always love Free People’s "going out" tops because they are affordable and chic; not to mention theyve never met a sequent they didn’t love. If you prefer to remain more subdued, grab a pair of patterned pants or a fun material like a velvet pant, a nice sequence pencil skirt to the knee and pair it with a crisp white or black button down shirt. You can pop the collar for even more affect.

A Neighbor Cocktail Party: A cocktail party at your neighbor’s house typically involves people you either really like and know well, or people you don’t spend a lot of time with so dress accordingly. If you're friends with the neighbors ask them what they plan on wearing. If they say something festive, then go for a fun party dress. If you can’t ask that type of question, opt for a nice tailored skirt and a fun top, or a great pair of pants and a festive top. You can never go wrong with a simple, black cocktail dress that you can dress it up or down.

A Family Christmas: Everyone has a different way of celebrating the holidays. In my home it’s an excuse to NOT have to dress up for a day meaning we wear leggings and sweats. If your home is more formal, go for a pencil skirt and button down blouse. It’s clean, classic and comfortable.

New Year's In the Suburbs: New Year’s in the suburbs can mean so many different things ... you can be going to a friend’s house with your kids which calls for T-shirts and jeans or you could be going to a party sans kids. A go-to staple is always a great pair of jeans and heels with a fun top. If you're attending a no kids, catered event then by all means break out the mini skirt or the low-cut top. Remember, it's always better to be over dressed for an occasion than under dressed!
