LEONIA, N.J. -- The Hackensack Post Office and the India Heritage Center commemorated the festival of Diwali with a ceremony honoring the newly issued Diwali Forever stamp.

The event was held at the Heritage Center’s daylong Diwali Mela 2016 cultural event at Overpeck County Park in Leonia Oct. 23.

It featured the unveiling of a poster-sized enlargement of the stamp.

One of the most important annual Hindu events, Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil.

The stamp features a photograph of a traditional diya – a small flickering lamp made from a bowl filled with oil – and flower petals against a glimmering gold background.

The word “Diwali” in white type is featured underneath the diya.

During the holiday, diyas dot the homes of observers around the world.

Participants in the stamp ceremony included USPS Northern New Jersey District Manager Steven Hernandez, National Advisory Council on South Asian Affairs Chair Ravi Batra, Hackensack Postmaster Anthony LoPrinzi, Heritage Center President Priua Israni and Vice President Vinni Melwani.

Diwali Stamp Project Chair Ranju Batra, vocalist Allison Macri, recording artist Manish Israni, Allendale Postmaster Melanie Matthews and USPS Northern New Jersey District Project Coordinator Tracey Hollingsworth were also on hand at the event.

“As one of the nation’s oldest public service institutions, the Postal Service regards it an honor to celebrate the nation’s diversity through our commemorative stamps,” said Hernandez.
