Moon Doggie Coffee Roasters, 108 Pleasant Ave., Maywood, (201) 556-0111
The Fine Grind: Moon Doggie, which calls itself the “premier” coffee roaster in northern Jersey, does a brisk business selling beans online, but it also has a café where it proffers lovingly crafted coffees, artisan whole leaf teas, and pastries.
Owner Donna Funk says she only sells coffee that is Arabica “specialty graded” and is bought from farms and estates that handpick and sort their beans. Doggie also roasts in small batches and never pre-packages the coffee it's mailing out so the beans don’t get stale. It also uses a water, not a chemical, process to make its decaf java.
Most Popular Brew: “New Moon,” a dark roast, and “Half a World Away,” a mix of medium and dark roasts top the list. But high-octane concoctions like the “Moon Doggie All Nighter,” with two shots of espresso, and the “Loco Cocoa Mocha” blends espresso with Ghirardelli hot chocolate, also seem to be among their best sellers.
