Celebrate National Pie Day With A Slice From A Bergen County Bakery

BERGEN COUNTY, N.J. -- Pie oh my. Saturday, Jan. 23 is National Pie Day, one of those unofficial food holidays created to celebrate pies and all their glory (or date we say, all of their fillings?).

According to the National Day Calendar, the first pies appeared around 9500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age. Aside from being a source of sweet tooth satisfaction, pies have also been used over the years for film humor ever since Actor Ben Turpin received one in the face in the silent movie, "Mr. Flip" in 1909.

In Bergen County, residents have a host of pie places to choose from. Plan now to buy yours. And feel free to tell us any we've missed.

Closter: There are always pies at The Barn but if you want a specific one, it's best to call ahead and order. There are no special plans for pie day -- although they may be for Pi Day on March 14, so check back. Ho-Ho-Kus: Pies are homemade with love by Chef/Owner Janice Tinari at Just Janice. Though there's always dessert on hand, if you want a full pie, it's best to order in advance. Ridgewood: Just for National Pie Day, Carlo's Bakery is making five-inch crumb pies made with the crumbs from its famous crumb cake. In the center you can opt for lemon, blueberry, cherry, or apple fillings. Grab a Fork: 12 Wilsey Sq., (201) 962-9080, www.carlosbakery.com/.
