The exhibition is in remembrance of those lost on April 16, 2014. Three hundred and four people -- mostly high school students -- died in the SEWOL ferry tragedy, in South Korea. Nine people are still missing, and the ferry has not been recovered.
The purpose of this exhibition is to remember the victims through the eyes of their family members. This special exhibition includes prints of the artwork by victims, family members of victims and artwork of ShinYoung An. The curators are Hojin Jung and Daejong Kim, who are members of SESAMO, People in Solidarity with the Families of SEWOL Ferry Victims.
"The sinking of the SEWOL ferry revealed the problematic social structure and conventions in South Korea, recognizing that the agony of the bereaved is not merely about the lives lost," a news release noted. "The families confess that the disaster of April 2014 challenged their once unswerving trust in the role of the nation to protect its people.
"Two years ago, they cried out for laws to exist for human dignity and survival. The world must not forget, instead learn lessons from the sunken SEWOL and correct what went wrong for future generations, remembering the dreams of the lost children."
The opening reception will be from 6-9 p.m., in the Lower Level Meeting Room. The library is located at 320 Main St., Fort Lee.
