North Jersey Celebrity Chef Carl Ruiz Dead At 44
North Jersey celebrity chef Carl Ruiz was found dead in his apartment Sunday morning, according to recent reports. Friends say the 44-year-old suffered a heart attack in his sleep. Ruiz owned Marie's Italian Specialties in Chatham for many years and was the executive chef at Sabor in Rutherford, along with Cuban Pete's In Montclair. Before that, he worked as a sous chef at Dish in Clifton. Last June, Ruiz opened La Cubana in New York City, paying homage to his Cuban roots. Pressure and competition have played equally important roles in Bergen County native Gregory Stott's life. The former pro golfer-turned-Wall Street stock broker combined both elements over the summer as a contestant on Food Network cooking show "Chopped." Parsippany native Kaitlyn Rose Pilsbury had some help from Food Network's "Restaurant Impossible" fixing up her California cafe. The show -- which ran from 2011 to 2016 -- was renewed this year and opened its 14th season on Saturday with Rosie's Cafe in Escondido, California. Tony Boloney's -- well-known for its over-the-top pizzas and massive subs -- is opening a Jersey City location in the near future. The restaurant currently has locations in Hoboken and Atlantic City and has confirmed a new spot on Jersey City's Grove Street. Clifton Girl Competing On Food Network Could Also School You In Martial Arts
A Passaic County girl will be competing in a Food Network baking show. Jenna Altanur of Clifton is competing on Season 6 of "Kids Baking Championship," airing Monday, Jan. 7. Last year, Linsey Lam of Closter won the show. She and 11 other junior bakers will be judged and hosted by Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman. The winner will take home $25,000 in prize money and a feature in Food Network Magazine. Altanur's favorite things to do are bake, dance and martial arts (she's a junior blackbelt). Tune into Food Network at 9 p.m. on Jan. 7. The show will air every Monday for 10 weeks.

Bergen County native Robbie DeRaffele's kitchen skills aren't exactly heroic. The Hackensack models works in Times Square as Superman by day and wants to learn to cook so the kitchen is no longer his kryptonite. The Paramus native has set fires in the kitchen and even gave himself salmonella poisoning from eating his own undercooked eggs. He believes culinary boot camp will help him become the best version of himself. DeRaffele will be transformed by chefs Robert Irvine and Anne Burrell on the show, airing at 9 p.m. on Aug. 12, on Food Network.
