Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center went well for Joan Kavanagh Mernick, said her husband, John.

“The arm is not broken, but her shoulder is messed up and may need surgery,” he wrote in a Facebook post late Monday.

The crash occurred just before 8 a.m. Monday at milepost 169.2 on the northbound parkway, New Jersey State Trooper Lawrence Peele said.

Mernick “told the trooper who spoke to her after the accident that she tried to avoid a vehicle that entered her lane and she lost control,” Peele told Daily Voice.

The driver continued on, he said.

“He just left her for dead,” John Mernick said.

Peele said State Police were still investigating “whether any contact was made” between the vehicle and the Dumont native’s motorcycle.

He asked that anyone who may have seen the crash, or has information that could help the investigation, call the NJSP: (609) 882-2000.
