Shell Casings Found At Two Glen Rock Schools Force Lockdowns

GLEN ROCK, N.J. -- Glen Rock authorities locked down the borough's elementary schools Friday afternoon after several shell casings were found in a playground -- a short time after lockdowns followed a 12-year-old student's discovery of a casing in a middle school classroom, Lt. Daniel Dour told Daily Voice.

A Bergen County Sheriff's K-9 unit and the sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification went to the grammar school this afternoon a short time after the morning incident concluded.

The Bergen County Sheriff's Office K-9 squads also swept the private schools in the borough as a precaution, Dour said.

The lockdowns were all lifted as of 3:30 p.m.

However, the sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification cordoned off the playground on the Byrd School's south side, where lunch aides Friday afternoon found .9mm and .22-caliber casings, said Dour, the department's commanding officer.

"This morning, a student at the middle school found a .38-caliber shell casing and gave it to the teacher," the lieutenant told Daily Voice. "We were notified and that got the ball rolling."

The middle and high schools were locked in place around 10:30 a.m.

Searches were conducted of all the lockers in both schools -- and of those in the particular classroom, "just as a precaution," Dour said.

The all-clear was given around 1 p.m. and the lockdown was lifted, Dour said.

"We no sooner cleared that scene than the lunch aides found different casings in the playground at the Byrd School," he said.

Dour placed extra officers at all of the schools during dismissals.
