Officer James McGill tried to pull the driver over around 6 p.m. Saturday for tailgating another vehicle on Maple Avenue, Police Chief Dean Ackermann said.

The cyclist sped off on Bedford Place, running a stop sign at Ashton Place, before accelerating onto Maple Avenue -- where he passed several vehicles at high speed, the chief said.

At that point, New Jersey Attorney General’s pursuit guidelines required McGill to end the pursuit.
