It began just before 12:30 p.m., when a 27-year-old Fair Lawn delivery driver parked his 2017 Subaru in a fire lane in front of his job at the East Wok Asian Restaurant on Prospect Avenue in Glen Rock, Fair Lawn Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
He was approached by another motorist, got into an argument, then moved the Subaru onto Prospect Avenue in Fair Lawn, Metzler said.
The other man twice left the scene but returned each time to continue the argument, the sergeant said.
The second time, he got out of his car with an aluminum baseball bat and struck the victim several times, he said.
The victim declined medical treatment at the scene, Metzler said.
His assailant took off but was later stopped by Glen Rock Police Officer Lucas Doney at Rock Road and Ackerman Avenue, Glen Rock Sgt. Robert Wojtecki said.
Among the responders was Officer Robert Manning, 46, who was headed north on Saddle River Road with his lights and sirens activated when his cruiser collided at Van Duren Avenue with a 2017 Lexus driven by a 65-year-old Wyckoff man, Metzler said.
The Wyckoff driver had made a left turn out of Van Duren Avenue in front of the cruiser and was struck from behind, the sergeant said.
The Fair Lawn Volunteer Ambulance took Manning to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.
The other driver appeared fine.
