Officer Sarah Orsita stopped a car driven by a 24-year-old Wanaque woman on Route 208 just before 5:30 p.m. on May 1 and found several used bags of heroin, 23 hypodermic syringes, a tourniquet and a pair of suboxone tabs, Police Chief Dean Ackermann said Monday.
Caitlin Oldziey also had a young boy and girl in the car – both under 8 years old and not in car seats, he said.
Oldziey already had a criminal record, including charges of stealing baby formula from a Riverdale Target four separate times last summer. She was carrying five bags of heroin, 15 used bags and two needles, police said at the time.
She was released and later skipped court, after which a warrant was issued for her arrest, authorities said.
Orsita charged Oldziey with drug-related offenses and issued her summonses for driving with drugs in the car and failing to use child car seats, Ackermann said.
“The children were turned over to the custody of their father and notification was made to NJ Department of Children and Families,” the chief said.
Oldziey, meanwhile, spent a day in the Bergen County Jail before a Central Judicial Processing Court judge in Hackensack released her under New Jersey’s 2017 bail reform law.
Orsita was on patrol just before 6:30 p.m. May 6 when a random license plate check indicated the owner’s driver’s license was suspended and that there was an active warrant for her arrest, Ackermann said.
Orsita, along with Officer Bob Surdyka, followed the car onto northbound Route 208 and pulled it over in a safe location, the chief said.
Danielle M. Porporino, 28 -- who had her 2-year-old daughter and a man with her – was wanted on an outstanding warrant by Wanaque police -- records show.
Her passenger, 28-year-old Marco J. Ortiz, also of Wanaque, had active warrants for his arrest out of Paterson, Ringwood, Kinnelon and Belmar, Ackermann said.
He was also carrying a bag of heroin, three empty bags, a hypodermic syringe and a spoon with heroin residue, the chief said.
Ortiz “admitted that the heroin, syringe and paraphernalia belonged to him and that he had used heroin prior to being stopped by police,” Ackermann said Monday.
Arrangements were made for Porporino’s father to pick up his granddaughter.
Porporino, meanwhile, was handed over to Wanaque police after receiving summonses for driving while suspended, operating an uninspected vehicle and failing to produce a vehicle registration. State child welfare authorities were notified.
Ortiz, meanwhile, was sent to the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing on drug-related charges and the outstanding warrants.
He remained held there on Monday.
