Pipes are bursting from the cold weather, flooding homes such as this one in Glen Rock.
A neighbor who saw water coming out of the East Grammercy Place residence summoned police, who found nearly five feet of water in the basement from a pipe that burst on the second floor.
PSE&G shut off electric and gas service to the home for safety reasons. Ridgewood Water Company disconnected water service.
Glen Rock firefighters and members of the Fair Lawn Rescue Squad pumped out the water.
Homeowners who leave their homes vacant for extended stretches in the winter should make sure they’re adequately heated, or shut off water service, officials said.
