The gas-fueled fire spread to the Valley National Bank on Lincoln Avenue -- knocking out power to the immediate area and sending smoke billowing -- after a high-voltage wire fell on a gas box around 11:15 a.m., Police Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
Police evacuated local residences and businesses, including the bank, which Metzler said began to fill with smoke from a basement fire fueled by the gas.
PSE&G crews continued to work through the afternoon to cap the leak, he said.
Some power was restored to homes and businesses but not in the immediate area, the sergeant said.
Authorities at the scene said the work might have to continue toward midnight before the fire is completely out and the gas is capped.
Fair Lawn’s fire and rescue squads were assisted by their colleagues from Elmwood Park, Glen Rock, Hawthorne, Saddle Brook and Wyckoff.
No injuries were reported.
