Charges are now expected to be upgraded to vehicular homicide against whomever struck Omar Monroig of Butler as he and a friend crossed the busy roadway between 51st and 52nd streets just before midnight on March 23.

Co-workers at Alcatel-Lucent, where Monroig worked as a project manager, learned of his death early this evening.

“This man was a bodybuilder,” one of those who knew him told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “That’s probably the only thing that kept him hanging on this long.

“The injuries were quite extensive.”

Monroig turned 42 two days earlier and was headed to the Havana Dulce restaurant when he was struck. According to North Bergen spokesman Phil Swibinski, the dark-colored northbound car — possibly a Toyota — carried Monroig 35 yards before stopping.

Police asked that anyone with information about the crash call the NBPD’s Traffic Division: (201) 392-2135.
