Police summoned the child's mother and a member of the NJ Division of Child Protection and Permanency after bringing Timothy Jacobsen and the boy to headquarters, Chief Dean Ackermann said.
Sgt. Frank Riggio and Detective Mike Trover tried pulling Jacobsen over on Lincoln Avenue near Princeton Place Saturday afternoon after seeing Jacobsen take his eyes off the road to use his cellphone, Ackermann said.
Jacobsen "continued to drive for several blocks before slowing to a stop" and "was observed making movement around the interior...and not maintaining control of the vehicle," the chief said.
After Riggo spotted a bag of crack in plain view, Jacbosen "told the officers that he was ashamed" because he had his son with him, Ackermann said.
"He admitted that he had traveled to Paterson to buy crack cocaine and was returning home when he was stopped," he said.
Jacobsen posted $250 bail for an outstanding warrant out of Hawthorne and was released on drug possession and child endangerment charges.
He was given a Feb. 10 date in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
