The Maple Avenue salon owner reported a call from what turned out to be a scammer citing an $861.17 utility bill that had to be paid immediately to prevent a shutoff, Police Chief Dean Ackermann said.
Following instructions, the business owner drove to a nearby pharmacy and obtained two green dot money packs for that amount, then relayed the card numbers to the caller, Ackermann said.
Borough detectives were investigating – but that money is basically gone.
It’s just one of many phone scams that, despite widespread media warnings, still con innocent, unwitting victims out of their money, the chief said.
“PSE&G will never demand a specific type of payment and threaten immediate service termination,” Ackermann said.
“If you receive a call directing you to go to a local store to purchase a pre-paid card to pay your bill, it is likely a scam,” he said.
“If you receive a strange call and are in doubt, hang up and call PSE&G at the phone number listed on your PSE&G bill,” the chief said.
