Fair Lawn’s finest honored for heroism

SPOTLIGHT: Fair Lawn police officers who performed a host of heroic feats the past year were honored by PBA Local 67 at a special awards ceremony at the Fair Lawn Athletic Club.

“Our men and women in blue put their lives on the line daily and are often confronted with dire situations,” said Fair Lawn PBA President Michael O’Brien.

“We are proud of all of our officers and their outstanding accomplishments.”

Those honored include:

Lt. Robert V. Kneer, who organized a detail to catch a suspected car thief, with the help of Detective Timothy O’Shaughnessy and Officer Anthony Lugo, after a brief foot chase.

The officers each received a Meritorious Service Award.

Detective Capt. Glen Cauwels, Sgt. Joseph Dawicki and Officers Thomas Check, Paul Donohue, Sean Nagle and William Hickey, responding to a call, found three suspects hiding in the shower of a home — with a handgun on the shower floor. They each received an Honorable Service Award.

Detective Sgt. Brian Metzler, Sgt. Lonnie Mergler and Officer Sean Nagle saved a man, through CPR/defibrillation, after finding him facedown on 2nd Street. They were given Lifesaving Medals.

Officers Luis Vasquez and Christopher Siano both received the Lifesaving Medal for rescucitating Barry Friedman, who wasn’t breathing when they found him, by using CPR and defibrillation.
