Several assets were dispatched to 36th Street, in the area between Broadway and Route 208, after the body was found just before 5 p.m. Those include the Bergen County Medical Examiner.

The person “inhaled toxic substances,” prompting concern for emergency workers and others in the area, said Jeanne Baratta, Chief of Staff for Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan.

Authorities quickly determined that the chemicals found next to the dead man in his blue Honda this afternoon posed no danger to area residents as long as the car remained closed.

Because officials had to bring the vehicle elsewhere for a safe removal — possibly the borough DPW garage — they hadn’t officially identified the man as of 10:30 p.m.
