The 16-year-old Ivy Lane resident told police he went to the kitchen for a glass of water just after 4 a.m. Thursday when he saw the burglar at the entrance, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
The intruder followed him into the next room, he said, where the boy said he grabbed the bat and hit the purported burglar once in the upper arm.
The boy told police the burglar took off, dropping $160 and two passports taken from the home.
A perimeter was established and a Bergen County Sheriff’s K-9 unit summoned.
The boy described the purported intruder as white and in his 30s, about 6 feet tall, with blue eyes and a full beard and wearing a black wool hat, gloves and several layers of black clothing.
Metzler asked that anyone who could identify the man in a police sketch based on the boy’s description, or has information that could help the investigation, call Fair Lawn Detective Peter Yuskaitis: (201) 794-5410.
