Officers Brian Simpson, Michael O’Brien and Brian Rypkema headed to Elaine Terrace after the call came in just after 11:30 Wednesday morning from a resident who saw a passenger get out of the car, force his way into the home and then hop back into the vehicle.

The posse was soon joined by Officers Eric Eleshewich, Gerard Graziano, Anthony Lugo and Detective Sgt. Brian Metzler, as well as a canine officer from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office.

Police from Glen Rock and Paramus, hearing the call, headed toward the area, as well.

An officer spotted the BMW and radioed the others.

Within minutes, Lugo stopped the car on Pellington Drive near Picket Place. Arrested was the driver, 22-year-old Jose L. Nieves of Newark. He’s being held on $35,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with burglary, pending a hearing in Fair Lawn Municipal Court.

The passenger was still at large as of this morning, Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Richard Schultz said.
