“The pills and syrup had been fraudulently obtained earlier in the day at pharmacies in Elmwood Park,” Sgt. Brian Metzler said this morning.

Detective Sgt. Tim O’Shaughnessy and Detectives Paul Donohue and Peter Yuskaitis found the drugs after stopping a suspicious 1996 Chrysler in the parking lot of the River Road pharmacy Thursday night, Metzler said.

The trio had tried to get more Oxy and cough syrup with a bogus prescription slip there but were turned away, the sergeant said.

Aaron Carter, 20, of Newark, and 18-year-old Janai Briana Travers of Irvington were being held on $25,000 bail each in the Bergen County Jail. A second man, Devonte Hayes, 21, also of Newark, made bail on Saturday, records show.

All three are charged with conspiring to buy drugs through fraud, attempting to buy drugs through fraud and two counts of forgery.

Carter also is charged with distributing and possessing drugs.
