Joshua Pacheco, 23, of Fair Lawn was being held at headquarters Wednesday afternoon following his arrest a little over an hour earlier, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

Detective Mark Wyka was driving an unmarked police car on 17th Street at Morlot Avenue when he saw Pacheco swipe a package from the front steps of a residence just after 12:30 p.m., Metzler said.

Pacheco heaed south, "taking three additional packages from residences along the way," the sergeant said.

Wyka summoned backups -- Officers Luis Vasquez and Chris O’Shaughnessy and Detective Paul Donohue -- who took Pacheco into custody without incident at St. Anne's Street, he said.

He was carrying assorted jewelry and "evidence of drug use," Metzler said.

The packages were being returned and the jewelry held while police determine whom it belongs to, he said.

Pacheco, meanwhile, was being charged with various drug and theft counts.

Metzler reminded residents and merchants to be vigilant during the holiday season, as the number of delivered packages increases.
