Elmwood Park Dad, Ump Scuffle At Glen Rock Girls Softball Game

GLEN ROCK, N.J. -- An argument between an Elmwood Park father and an umpire at a girls grade-school softball game in Glen Rock got physical, leaving the dad suspended from the field for a year and claiming he was injured, authorities said.

Borough recreation officials were following up, the chief said.

Witnesses told officers responding to the Clara E. Coleman School ball field last Wednesday night that the umpire ejected the 53-year-old dad from the game of 7th-, 8th- and 9th-graders after he’d been riding him.

The father “confronted the umpire after the game and a dispute ensued when the man refused to allow the umpire to leave,” Police Chief Dean Ackermann said Monday. “At some point the dispute was reported to have become physical.

“It was ugly,” another parent told Daily Voice.

“While witnesses claimed the Elmwood Park man was the aggressor, the man denied that claim and requested medical attention for an alleged injury,” Ackermann said.

An EMS unit took him to The Valley Hospital by EMS, the chief said.

“Both parties were advised of their right to sign a complaint with the Glen Rock Municipal Court,” Ackerman said.

The Glen Rock Director of Recreation was following up with the league, he said.
