DWI driver rams Port Authority cruiser, drives wrong way over NJ Turnpike bridge from Bayonne to Newark

Christian Toral Aguirre, 25, of Queens drove his blue BMW X5 into the rear of the cruiser on the eastbound Route 78 extention near the Bayonne exit at 6:30 a.m., pushing the police vehicle into the guardrail and disabling it, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight.

Airbags in the cruiser deployed, as well, he said.

Aguirre drove west in the eastbound lanes — hitting estimated speeds of 90 miles an hour — before New Jersey State Police troopers helped stop him at Exit 15, Pentangelo said.

Aguirre smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and had trouble walking and standing, he said.

A breath test registered more than twice the legal limit, Pentangelo said.

The two PAPD officers in the car that was struck were treated at Jersey City Medical Center before being released, he said.

Aguirre refused medical treatment, Pentangelo said.

Police charged him with DWI, eluding and leaving the scene of an accident.
