UPDATE: The driver of an SUV that flipped onto its side in a four-vehicle chain-reaction crash on northbound Route 208 in Fair Lawn this afternoon walked away uninjured after a good Samaritan pulled him from the car.
“One of the many benefits of wearing a seat belt,” Sgt. Kenneth Cavanaugh said after the 3:20 p.m. pileup, police told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
A BMW convertible sedan rear-ended the SUV, which flipped and hit a car in front of it, sending it into another vehicle, the sergeant said.
Several people stopped and rushed to help.
“I thought it was a fatal,” the good Samaritan who got the driver out of the SUV told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “The seat belt is what saved him.”
The driver of the car hit by the SUV was taken to the hospital after he complained of minor pain, he said.
