“One of the many benefits of wearing a seat belt,” Sgt. Kenneth Cavanaugh said after the 3:20 p.m. pileup, police told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

A BMW convertible sedan rear-ended the SUV, which flipped and hit a car in front of it, sending it into another vehicle, the sergeant said.

Several people stopped and rushed to help.

“I thought it was a fatal,” the good Samaritan who got the driver out of the SUV told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “The seat belt is what saved him.”

The driver of the car hit by the SUV was taken to the hospital after he complained of minor pain, he said.

Fair Lawn’s Heavy Rescue and Engine Co. 3 responded along with police.
