Closter business consultant charged with scamming Bergen investors did it before, authorities say

ONLY ON CVP: A Closter man had been through a pre-trial intervention program that cleared previous charges when authorities last month accused him of scamming four victims out of more than $100,000 in a bogus overseas investment scheme, records show.

Michael D’Antoni, a 56-year-old self-employed business consultant who also has acted in off-Broadway plays, was brought to the Bergen County Jail this week to face theft charges after being extradited from New York City.

Authorities in Manhattan arrested the Demarest native when he showed up for a court hearing on Nov. 21.

D’Antoni, who operated a company called M&L Global Partners, already was under indictment in Bergen County from last year on forgery offenses, records show.

This came after he entered a pre-trial intervention program to clear his record of similar counts following an indictment in 2008.

Authorities say D’Antoni, who operated out of Manhattan, has a trail of bad checks behind him, including one written for $26,500 out of Fair Lawn.

Most recently, he “convinced four individuals four individuals to give him funds in excess of $100,000 for the purchase of goods to be exported out of the country with a guaranteed large return on the investment,” Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said last month.

“The goods were never acquired by Dantoni and the overseas buyers were non-existent,” the prosecutor said.
