Steven Duckack, 59, assaulted the 64-year-old victim when he showed up at Duckack’s Smith Avenue apartment to pick up the woman just after 5:30 p.m. Sept 23, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.

“During the assault, the victim sustained facial injuries and later required emergency medical attention,” the prosecutor said.

He was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, where “his condition steadily worsened,” Grewal said.

He died there Tuesday, the prosecutor said.

Originally charged with aggravated assault, Duckack remained held on $250,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail on the upgraded counts.

A first appearance on those charges was scheduled for this Friday in Superior Court in Hackensack.
