The girl was walking with her 31-year-old mother on Lambert Road near Memorial Middle School just before 4:30 p.m. Oct. 14 when the dog grabbed hold of the girl's buttocks, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
"Two passer-bys stopped, kicking and hitting the dog until it released its grip," Metzler said. "The juvenile received several puncture wounds from the attack.
"One of the Samaritans, a 41-year-old man from Fair Lawn, suffered a wrist injury after he fell while trying to help," the sergeant said. "The other Samaritan, a 49-year-old female, was bit on the leg."
Fair Lawn Ambulance took the girl and the man who helped her to The Valley Hospital for treatment of their injuries, Metzler said.
The owners of the dog, named Gilbert, were directed to keep him quarantined for 10 days inside their home, pending a follow-up by the borough Health Department.
Police believe a contractor left a backyard gate unlocked, allowing the dog to get out.
