BEYOND BERGEN: A bail jumper rammed his car into a Port Authority police cruiser twice, then hopped out and ran before the officer cornered him in a Newark grocery store, authorities said.

The officer, on patrol near Newark Airport, stopped the 1997 Nissan Maxima on northbound Routes 1&9 for not having a front liciense plate, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said.

After pulling over, 33-year-old Charles H. Brown of Newark sped off, Pentangelo said.

The officer followed him onto Route 21 and alerted Newark police, he said.

Brown drove recklessly before during down a dead end, Pentangelo said.

After coming to stop, he put the car into reverse, hitting the officer’s cruiser and an unoccupied parked BMW, before accelerating and hitting the Port Authority vehicle again, he said.

Brown then bailed and ran a block and a half to the grocery store, where the officer found him removing his outermost shirt and took him into custody, Pentangelo said.

The unregistered car was impounded and Brown was jailed on charges of eluding, resisting, criminal mischief and bail jumping. He also was issued several summonses.
