Giovanni Ciurciu, 94, Longtime Fair Lawn Resident

FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- Giovanni Ciurciu, of Fair Lawn, died on Wednesday, April 20. He was 94.

Born and raised in Sicily, Ciurciu immigrated to the U.S. in 1969. He lived in Paterson before moving to Fair Lawn 25 years ago. He was a former parishioner of St. Anthony Church in Paterson. "An avid gardener, always cultivating his tomatoes, he enjoyed cooking and was always busy tending to what needed fixing," information from the funeral home noted.

Ciurciu loved spending time with family. Before he retired, he was an assembly lineman with Paterson Can Company for many years. He had been a builder and mason in Sicily.

He is survived by his children, Ignazio Ciurciu and his wife Maria, Joseph Ciurciu and his wife Rosetta, Maria Cappello and her husband Edward, and Rosetta Cusumano and her husband Joseph; grandchildren Carmen, John and Vinnie Ciurciu, Daniela Kearns, Anna and Christina Cappello, and Melissa and Joseph Cusumano; great-grandchildren Andrea, Alessia, Sophia, Victoria, Madison, Luke, Roman, Maeve, Joey, Nolan, Luca and Giselle; and sister Maria Falcone.

Ciurciu was predeceased by his wife, Carmela (DiMartino) Ciurciu, and his siblings, Frank Ciurciu, Salvatrice Vaccarello and Giuseppina Vittorio.

Visiting hours will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Rd., in Fair Lawn. A funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, at St. Anne Church, 15-05 St. Anne St., in Fair Lawn. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, in Paterson.
